Following from the last post concerning the athletical prowess of Pierce College students, entitled: Athletic Pierce College, here’s a closer look at Pierce College itself.
Pierce College, in the Los Angeles district is also known as simply Pierce, is a 2 year community college. It serves in excess of 20,000 students in and is situated in Woodland Hills, which is a community within the city of Los Angeles district known as San Fernando Valley. That’s for those who are not familiar with the area, of course.
There is even a corny acronym which looks something like: Persian Immigrants Expecting Real College Education. Lucky for the politically correct brigade there are no Persians looking, or someone might get egg on their face!
Pierce college started life with a mere 70 students and 18 faculty members on September 15th, 1947.
It was originally called the Clarence W. Pierce School of Agriculture. The institution’s initial focus, as you may gather from the name was crop cultivation and animal husbandry. In 1956 the educational facility was renamed “Los Angeles Pierce College,” which retained the name of its founder, Dr. Pierce. It also retained his commitment to agricultural and veterinary study as Pierce still to this day maintains a 200 acre working farm for hands-on training.

Pierce College currently offers courses on over 100 subjects in 92 academic disciplines. It also possesses transfer alliances with most of the other universities in the state. Pierce College can boast very enviable transfer rates to UC and CSU schools.
At Pierce College, honors students have a 100% admission rate to UCLA. They also graduate with higher grade point averages than students coming from other Southern Californian community colleges in, according to the UCLA Office of Academic Planning following a ten-year study.
Pierce College students represent the largest number of transfers to CSUN and Pierce College has the highest acceptance rate into veterinary medicine graduate schools of any community college in the US.
Students can pursue any of the 43 Associate’s degrees or 78 Certificates of Achievement the school offers directly in lieu of transfer.
The Site
Pierce College campus covers some 426 acres (1.72 km²) which is an area considerably larger than many other university campuses, including UCLA. The campus grounds are landscaped with over 2,200 trees, several thousands of rose bushes plus a 1.9 acre botanical garden.
The Pierce College farm possesses small herds of sheep, cattle, goats and pigs plus a small poultry flock. For its students to gain knowledge and learn from, there is also a llama and an alpaca, in keeping with Pierce College’s agriculturally educational roots.
